Mattsson off the mark in WCOOP as Spraggy and Papo MC aim for World Championship title

The wait is over. The 2022 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is under way — and it’s got off to a flyer. Here’s our first daily update brining all the action from the PokerStars tables.

TODAY’S HEADLINES

  • Mattsson wins maiden(!?!) WCOOP title
  • Spraggy and Papo in World Championship final
  • Nineteen events get started on opening night

BEHIND THE HEADLINES

“C. Darwin2” finally off the mark in WCOOP

Mattsson finally gets his WCOOP title: The very first tournament to finish in this year’s WCOOP was the $530 buy-in Sunday Cooldown — aka WCOOP 7-H — and it brought us a very familiar champion. However, in news that will probably come as a huge surprise to followers of online poker, Simon “C. Darwin2” Mattsson‘s success in this tournament, in which he earned $52,820, is the first WCOOP victory of his career. It barely makes sense. Mattsson is currently the all-time leader in online tournament cashes, according to Pocket Fives, and is a fixture at final tables across all disciplines. He has five SCOOP titles, for example. But according to our records, he has only ever won a WCOOP Second Chance tournament, and has finished runner up at least twice in other WCOOP events. Despite 285 documented tournament victories, and $24.3 million in documented cashes, this, then, represents a maiden WCOOP title for the Swedish crusher.

Titles head to Ukraine and Brazil: The low and medium versions of Event 7 both attracted enormous fields and earned their winners maiden titles too. Brazil’s “jason873” won the $5.50 tournament, beating a field of 8,245, for a $3,716 score, while “dash4fun” of Ukraine, beat 4,676 to the $21,717 prize in the $55 buy-in event. Both those totals include bounties. Event 7 was the only event to play to its conclusion last night, which means we have only three champions at this stage.

Alejandro “Papo MC” Lococo: A final to kick off 2022 WCOOP

Two PokerStars Team Pros aim for World Championship title: WCOOP got off with a bang last night, including the first World Chamionship event: a $5,200 buy-in tournament will determine the World Champion of Progressive KO poker. And, when the tournament reached its final table and paused, two PokerStars Ambassadors were still in the hunt: Alejandro “Papo MC” Lococo, who plays on PokerStars as “[Papo]AR”, and Ben “Spraggy” Spragg. The pair sit in sixth and eighth, respectively, with $93K, plus bounties, available for the winner. It’s going to make for an excellent final table tonight, with Ole “wizowizo” Schemion also there, and “klem90” of Austria leading the way. It’s going to be streaming on the PokerStars central streaming platforms, and with a Spraggy-eye view, on his Twitch channel. Fintan “easywithaces” Hand is also worth watching tonight, in Day 2 of the $530 WCOOP Kickoff.
